MASSIVE PULMONARY COLLAPSE FOLLOWING ANESTHESIA

Abstract
Two cases of massive pulmonary collapse are reported as a complication of general anesthesia. One occurred 24 hours after lower segment cesarean, section and the other occurred on 8th postoperative day after abdomino-perineal resection. The former is alived and the later died. Bronchoscophy and postmortem examinations in these cases failed to reveal the usual causes of atelectasis. Specifically, there were no bronchial secretions or obstruction, nor was there pulmonary compression. The literature was reviewed from previous clinical reports of this syndrome as well as reports of experimental works that has been done to determine the etiology of massive pulmonary collapse. In conclusion we are still do not know the exact mechanism or etiology of massive pulmonary collapse.
